DESCRIPTION: Cambric Research Site located to the west of 5-01 (Short Pole) Road, south of 5-07 Road. A 750-ton underground nuclear test named Cambric was conducted in alluvium (sand and gravel) at this site on May 14, 1965.A companion test, Cheshire, was conducted on Pahute Mesa volcanics on February 14, 1976. Both were conducted for special studies into the movement of groundwater. For the Cambric test, scientists drilled a well 300 feet from the ground zero and, during a period of 16 years, pumped four billion gallons of water to force radioactive elements to move out of the cavity made by the Cambric test. It took two years of continuous pumping to move tritium 300 feet from the cavity to the well.Although 98 percent of the tritium concentration was in the Cambric cavity, the maximum level ever detected at the sample well was less than a tenth of a percent. Radioactive elements such as strontium-90, cesium-137, plutonium, and uranium were never detected during pumping activities.
