Sensitive Biota and Habitat Monitoring Program

Numerous plants and animals occur on the NTS which are not protected under the Endangered Species Act but are considered sensitive for one or more of the following reasons:

  • They are protected by other state or federal regulations
  • Their populations are distributed over a very small area or region
  • The numbers of known populations are low
  • Their abundance within known populations is low
  • Their populations are susceptible to harm from activities similar to those on the NTS
  • They are managed as game or furbearers by the State of Nevada

One goal of the Sensitive Biota and Habitat Monitoring Program on the NTS is to ensure that NTS projects do not threaten the continued existence of sensitive species, the important resources these species rely on such as nest sites, or of any unique or protected habitats on the site.

Another goal of the Program is to ensure that all NTS projects adhere to state and federal regulations aimed at protecting wild horses, migratory birds, wetlands, and wildlife habitat.
